Guided White Water Rafting Trips River Description / Natural History |
The Grand Ronde River in
the Blue Mountains of Northeast Oregon travels 40 miles between Minam and Troy
through a beautiful and isolated wild and scenic river canyon. The put in for
this run is along highway 82, one hour north of La Grande, Oregon at the Minam
Store. The first 10 miles are on the Wallowa River, which merges with the
Grande Ronde River at Rondowa. The scenery is steep arid canyon land with
ponderosa pine forests, meadows and excellent wild flowers. Most areas of the
river are roadless and primitive. The rapids in general are mild class I - II+. During the spring high water season there are powerful eddy lines and significant hydraulic features that deserve attention from all boating parties. During these high water times the river is rated class III. This is a very popular trip for families! There is catch and release trout fishing in the late spring and summer and good steelhead fishing in the early spring or late fall. Please consult Oregon and Washington fishing regulations. Historical inhabitants of this area include the Nez Perce, Umatilla, Walla Walla and Cayuse Indians. In the great immigration of the late 1800s and early 1900s many homesteaders, minors and trappers passed through the area. Abandoned home sites and cultural sites are visible in the canyon at many locations. The river is managed to preserve its wild character and natural beauty by the BLM, Vale District office, 3165 - 10th Street, Baker City, Oregon 97918; (541) 523-1256 For more information on guided trips contact All Star Rafting. |
